Rogers 3G Sunset: What’s Happening, Why It Matters, and How It Could Affect You

Rogers is officially retiring its 3G (UMTS/HSPA) network. While earlier messaging indicated a sunset date of July 31, 2025, the timeline has shifted: the company now confirms that a phased shutdown began on August 7, 2025, with an expected completion by the end of 2025

Why Is Rogers Turning Off 3G?

Cellular technology keeps evolving. As 4G (LTE) and 5G networks now dominate, maintaining older infrastructure like 3G becomes cost-inefficient. Rogers is reallocating spectrum and optimizing networks to deliver faster speeds, enhanced coverage, and better capacity.

This transition is entirely a Rogers initiative. It aligns with broader industry trends; Bell, Telus, and other Canadian carriers are also retiring 3G. We’re a local security and monitoring provider, our services rely on cellular communicators—so these changes are driven by the network provider (Rogers), not us.

Who Could Be Affected?

1. Older Phones and Non-VoLTE Devices

If a device is 3G-only or doesn’t support Voice over LTE (VoLTE), it may fallback to 2G (if available)—where voice and texting may fail in busier areas, and data is unavailable—or lose service entirely
Rogers.

2. Alarm Monitoring and IoT Devices

Security systems using Rogers 2G/3G cellular communicators may stop working starting Aug 7, 2025. If devices rely solely on 3G, communication may cease, triggering trouble alerts or malfunction.

3. Smart Devices—Watch, Tablets, Home Phones

Any smart device still on 3G will lose mobile connectivity. Data fails, Wi‑Fi only remains. Users need LTE/5G-compatible replacements
Rogers.
